The clinical relevance and widespread incidence of axon demise prompts the question of how axons degenerate and how we can manipulate the rate of axon loss, as well as restore connectivity by exploiting axonal plasticity. These studies also lead us to discover that some of the signaling molecules under scrutiny are more important in the central nervous system, where they inhibit oligodendrocyte myelination.
