I'd had a long standing interest in firefighting and had, many years ago, considered becoming a whole-time firefighter with Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service. Once at the station, the crews staff the fire engine and proceed to the incident. Most brigades offer several types of retained contract with different levels of commitment based around the hours of cover you can offer. They must also undertake routine checks on their equipment and fire appliance, as well as test, clean and maintain the equipment to ensure it will work properly when required during an emergency. The most common method is for a retaining fee to be paid based on the hours per week you are contracted to be on call, plus payments for responding to calls, maintaining the equipment, carrying out community fire safety work etc. ?^l%Xu/A_ߞ>Y>,4w&c This involves talks to local school children, home safety checks, and fitting of free smoke detectors in homes. It also hugely affects family life with the commitment required to maintain operational cover, the cover that is needed to make sure there are enough firefighters with the right skills to ensure a fire service has sufficient crew with the right skills to be able to respond to emergencies. That said the RDS firefighters are a valuable asset to their local community forming strong relationships within the local community and as a close-knit team.

By this we mean ‘will there be people interested within the community to take up such a role?’. Will there be people willing to take on such a demanding job both mentally and physically? When required to answer an emergency call, retained firefighters are summoned to the fire station by a radio pager (also known as an "alerter"). Retained firefighters are a vital part of today’s fire and rescue service. On-call Firefighter (retained) Read about being an On-call Firefighter in our booklet. Fire and Rescue NSW (FRNSW) Retained (on-call) Firefighters are a diverse group of men and women who balance other work, study and family commitments, but enjoy being part of a team and working with people and other emergency services.
London firefighters are paid more. This demonstrates the growing pressure on RDS crews to maintain competencies with an already full training schedule. With the current economy and the ongoing cuts the FRS faces, the RDS are being used more and more to fill the gaps, which is the direction most FRS are now having to look at taking.
It also gives them the opportunity to carry out training with facilities that are not available on station. The training courses delivered to the RDS crews are the same as wholetime firefighters and quite often there is a mix of both on a course, which in my eyes is a good thing as they both respond to the same level of incidents.
The pros and cons of this is something that is often open for debate. An ongoing problem that fire services face is, will the local communities be able to support the demand of recruitment? Yearly, 2 yearly or 3 yearly training courses are attended at their FRS (fire and rescue service) training center, these are required to maintain their operational license and keep up to date with any new operational developments and procedures. Unfortunately, the majority of the general public are not aware that retained firefighters exist, let alone that their local fire station is a retained station.Apart from a few hours a week for training sessions and to carry out other pre-arranged duties, retained firefighters only attend the fire station when they have received an emergency callout. It’s also a good time to exchange experiences and knowledge etc.One issue is the increase in operational knowledge and extra skills placed on firefighters on a regular basis, this puts extra strain on our RDS crews as they only have a limited number of hours to train a week, not only having to maintain their current skills but also maintain and learn new skills.
During this period they will be given a brief on critical safety information, updates and carry out training sessions to maintain their operational skills and competencies. On-call firefighters now undertake the same training modules as full-time recruits, spread over a greater period of time due to full-time employment job commitments.
On average you can expect to be called out 2 or 3 times a week for perhaps a couple of hours. The role forms a vital part of today's fire and rescue service.
Unfortunately life and another career got in the way They provide cover to 90% of the area of the UK - there are 14,000 in Retained firefighters were traditionally called "part-time firefighters".
