I read this book as part of my book club, I was a bit dubious as its not the sort of book I read but it was so well written and such an amazing story I really enjoyed it but was sad that this sort of thing actually does happen in real life.
It took me longer than normal to read as I had to concentrate a bit more but I found myself really caring about Dulcie and what happened to her. A true storyteller and a master of gripping storylines that keep the reader hooked from beginning to end, Pearse introduces you to characters that it is impossible not to care about or forget. I was wrong. You know you are going to the bottom, now you need to figure out how to get there!Wow!!

They should hang.Still as beautiful, though sad as I remembered from reading it 11 years agoI have been fascinated by the awful events of the orphan migrant trade between the UK and Australia ever since it was briefly mentioned in a call the midwife episode, so when I saw this book I knew I had to read it, and i'm glad I did. There is no formula to her books or easily defined genre. I was on the edge of my seat so to speak most of the time I was reading this book. Life is too short to read a book you don’t enjoy. The story is dark and twisted and kept me reading even when I should have been doing other stuff. There must have been a tremendous amount of research which went into the making of this book and Lesley Pearse has captured the heartbreaking events in a moving and sensitive way. Very sad to read what happened to orphaned children in UK and Australia and those sent to various locations to those thought to be worthy of looking after children with love and compassion only to now find out they were the destroyers. (The acronym to SOL is particularly ironic.) They all get their own story lines and seemed to me that they were at least the equal if not more important that Jeff at times.
