It would work as well if it were a conversion from atheism to Judaism's, or from any number of -isms to another. Mormon guy goes "duh! 6 out of 11 found this helpful. The main character's decision to join or not only occurs in the first half of the movie. I gave this movie two chances and both times it let me down, even though I wasn't expecting great things from it in any case. I attend BYU-Idaho, where Jack Weyland, the guy who wrote the book the movie is based on, teaches. If so, then CHARLY is not for you. I'll return to the theatre to re-see this film -- and look forward to eventually purchasing it on DVD!

It goes without saying that the same pretentious film critics (or supposed film "critics") on this board will take pop shots at this film. Charly comes to Salt Lake from New York City to visit her family and meet Sam Roberts.

As for the film: Jack Weyland, in an interview with the Deseret News, said: "I'm finally satisfied with the story. It is now one of my top three favorite movies. What a wonderfully charming film! I'm sort of scared by movies based on books, but this one is worthy. I had read the local film critics clever put downs ('CHARLY' Pours Syrup Over Green Jell-O wrote Sean Means of the Salt Lake Tribune). I broke into tears... i could not believe I was wasting my time watching this awful religious pamphlet. This was not an LDS movie, this was a love story that was centered around a belief that happened to be LDS. Was this review helpful?

You won't regret it. Your enjoyment of the film depends on your level of awareness with yourself. I don't see that it makes any difference. Community. Don't get hung up on the fact that this movie features a conversion to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

It was also a pleasant surprise to see Diana Dunkley playing Sam's mom, after having performed with her in a local production of Hello Dolly several years earlier. I guess to get their approval you need to douse your film with misery and dead babies.

The acting was great and there are funny moments also. Now first time director, Adam Thomas Anderegg, using a fine script adaptation by Janine Whetten Gilbert, has turned CHARLY into a deeply moving story of love and faith! When there was no interest he turned it into a novel that became a surprise "hit" among Latter-day Saint readers (mainly teenagers) -- and has remained popular for some 20 years. The rest deals with the relationship between Charly and Sam, including the arguments, hardships and tragedies that happen IN SPITE OF their faith. Take kleenex's I will go out on a limb and assume that the filmmakers are "Mormon" and in so doing, congratulate them on their courage and honesty to make this movie.

To me, that's what makes the movie such a good idea: sure, the main characters talk about baptism, but they do it with personality, and they never turn to the camera and say that the Mormon church is for everyone. A woman returns from holiday to find her husband has been murdered, and several groups of people are pressuring her to unravel the mystery of his true identity and activities during his final days. A documentary about Director Jonathan Demme's cousin, an Episcopalian minister in Harlem. I'm a 58 year old, combat vet of Vietnam, a "Porter Rockwell Mormon" and this movie had me welling up!!
